Self publishing picture books for different ages

Generally speaking, a children’s picture book is a book in which illustrations play a major role in bringing the story to life. Illustrations usually appear on every page or every second page. The age group is around 4 to 8 years old. The word count for the story is around 1,000 words. The traditional page count is either 24 pages or 32 pages, and books can be bound as either a softcover or hardcover (with or without a dustjacket).

Baby books are for the under-1 set and typically feature nursery rhymes, lullabies, or just illustrations without any words.

Toddler books are aimed at kids between 1 and 3 (see Children’s Board Book Self Publishing).

Early picture books target children between 4 or 5 years old. They tell simple stories and contain under 1,000 words.

Easy readers are for kids who are in the early stages of reading, around 6 to 8 years old. These books contain anywhere from 200 to 1,500 or 2,000 words and are 32 to 64 pages long. The sentences are short, contain one main idea, and total about 2 to 5 sentences per page.

We look forward to helping you on your children’s book publishing adventure.
